Within These Walls: A Viewer's Guide to the White House and Teacher's Guide are print guides accompanying the videotape Within These Walls: A Visit to the White House produced by WQED Pittsburgh for the White House Historical Association in 1992.
The White House Historical Association wished to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the laying of the White House cornerstone (1792) with an educational videotape to serve both classrooms and general viewers.
The 33 minute video was only able to tap a fraction of the fascinating information about the White House. The Viewer's Guide was conceived to fill the gaps for general viewers. The Teacher's Guide adds specific material to help teachers use the video as a classroom resource. A "secret" set of still images was added to the video after the credits to serve as visual resources for the classroom.
The tape was distributed at cost to schools throughout the nation and sold at the White House Visitor's Center and through the mail. The first edition of 30,000 sold out and was reprinted in 1994. It was also broadcast nationally on public television stations.
Activity and drawing copyright 1988, Susan K. Donley, used with permission by the White House Historical Association.
A sequel Upon these Grounds: Exploring the White House Gardens, a videotape with activity guide was released in Spring 1997. Sue researched the video, wrote the treatment and wrote and designed the activity guide.
Available on videocassette from WQED/Pittsburgh and the White House Historical Association.
